For dinner with a view, the rooftop at No.1 Poultry and the restaurants near the top of the Heron Tower on Bishopsgate both do the job, and both need booking. Sweetings on Queen Victoria Street is the opposite proposition, unchanged for well over a century and a genuinely City thing to show someone.
Hotels here were mostly banks. The Ned on Poultry occupies the old Midland Bank building, with restaurants spread across the former banking hall, and Threadneedles is a converted bank as well. If your evening runs late and you want somewhere quieter, the Thames path below Cannon Street is a short walk from all of it.
